Abstract
The importance of psychiatric emergency care has recently increased in Korea. A national-level mental emergency response system, including regional psychiatric emergency medical centers, has been established and implemented, though it is inadequate. Several countries have established clear transport systems, various training programs, guidelines based on actual situations, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure rapid and appropriate responses to psychiatric emergencies. In Korea, there is an insufficient initial response; lack of communication between related organizations; difficulty securing acceptable hospitalization after the initial response; scarcity of general hospitals capable of acute intensive care; lack of manpower and facilities at regional psychiatric emergency medical centers; and lack of treatment and management regarding the patients¡¯return to the community. To resolve these issues, the psychiatric emergency manual must be revised, emergency transport system must be improved, community mental emergency response council for understanding must be activated, related organizations must cooperate, and general hospitals for acute mental and medical care must be established.
